  1. SLOUGH
We have learnt that Slough has been industrialised:
“Come, bombs and blow to smithereens those air conditioned bright canteens”
This implies that he feels suicidal because he is asking bombs to blow up slough
The word “blow” shows that it could be like a hurricane when the bombs fall.

We have leart that Slough orders tinned food
“Tinned Fruit tinned meat tinned milk tinned beans”
this shows that they are ordering food that Instead of using the food they use to grow. The word “tinned” implies that its trapped and manky.

    OLLIE COULLING-GREEN Life in Slough

Life in slough is very industrialised and there is no place to graze a cow:
``There is no place to graze a cow’’
This shows that if there no place to graze a cow there is any grass at all.
There is no place to graze a cow because all the land is full of industrial buildings

There is a man that has a double chin and is greedy, selfish and sly. He doesn’t care about the land or the cows
`` and get the man with the double chin’’
The man with the double chin only care about money and his career

  5. What do we learn about life in slough from the poem?

We learn that life in slough is very modern from the poem:
    “Those air-conditioned, bright canteens”
This show that everything is very up-to-date and that he doesn’t want to be living in these sort or environments. The word “those” shows that there are lots of technical places in slough.

We learn that life in slough is full of greedy people from the poem:
“And get the man with the double chin”
This shows that life in slough is selfish because they are taking all the food for themselves so they are getting fat. The word “double” shows that he is so fat he has two chins.

  6. We learn that life in Slough in this poem is largely industrial:
‘There isn’t grass to graze a cow’. This shows that all the grass is gone and all of the cows are gone. This also shows that all of Slough is building and industrial estate. The word “isn’t” shows that things that were there before aren’t there anymore e.g grass, countryside because of this the poet feels distressed and suicidal.

We learn that people in Slough have lost their original qualities:
“And get that man with the double chin
Who’ll always cheat and always win”
This shows that people from Slough have been changed by money and business. This also shows that this certain person has lost his former self to greed and wealth. This word “cheat” shows that he has exploited his old self thanks to power and importance. This makes the poet feels frustrated.

In ‘Slough’ there is no species for the countryside
’’There isn’t grass to graze a cow’’
This shows that Slough is a disappointment! A disturbing town, all the animals have gone, the hearts of Slough have gone. The words ‘isn’t grass’ shows that the grass the countryside of Slough is no more it is industrial state.

From the poem we learn that life in slough is not a fun as you think:

“Mess up the mess they call a town”

This implies that the poet that wrote this poem doesn’t see slough as a town more like a rubbish tip, and he wants someone to come and destroy it and make it like the old days again. The word “mess” shows that they think of slough as a place were every body abandons there rubbish in the streets and leaves it along with there town to rot. The repetition of mess suggests that the really mean what they are saying and the poet feels angry about it.

From the poem we can also learn that people aren’t maybe as kind as you may think:
“and get that man with the double chin, who’ll always cheat and win.”

This implies that people will cheat to win money and other items of objects the words “cheat and win” suggests that he is a greedy person who will always win. This makes the poet feel annoyed that he never wins.

  10. What do we learn about life in slough from the poem?

What we learn about life in slough from this poem is that people who live there are stuck up:
“And get that man with the double chin who’ll always cheat and always win!”
This sentence suggests that the people who live in slough only care about the money and that they have to work to get more money! All they care about is money, money, money! The words “chin” and “win” imply that there is bitterness and hatred between each person who lived in slough and that the people in slough are greedy.

We also learn from the poem slough that there is not enough country side left:

“There isn’t grass to graze a cow.”
The words “isn’t grass” suggests that slough went from a beautiful countryside any more and all it is a big industrial city with a few fields.

  11. 1. Life in slough has become more industrial and the countryside is gone almost completely including all the cows ‘’there isn’t graze a cow ‘’
And people are becoming more suicidal ‘’come friendly bombs fall on slough’’
This shows that the author is angry and suicidal

2.Another thing we learn about Slough is that it’s unhealthy:
‘’tinned fruit, tinned milk, tinned beans, tinned minds, tinned breath”
This shows that the author is disgusted of what slough has become and it makes him angry and unhappy

  12. What do we learn about life in Slough from the poem?

What we learn that life in Slough is that it is not very nice:
‘There isn’t grass to graze a cow’
This shows that cows are not welcome in Slough because they can’t graze and there is no grass. The word ‘isn’t’ implies that something is not there where it’s supposed to be or something is in the wrong place.

What we learn about life in Slough is that it isn’t a good place for humans:
‘It isn’t fit for humans now’
This shows that it is not very safe for humans at all. The words ‘isn’t fit for humans’ implies that Slough is not the right place for humans and they should probably leave Slough before it is too late.

  13. What do we learn about life in slough from the poem?

In slough we learn life is annoying:
“And get the man with the double chin
Who always cheats and always wins.”
This shows that people that do not deserve things normally get things .The word cheats implies that he is a liar and does not deserve the wealth that he gets. There is a rhyme of “Chin” and “win” that seems that he’s angry and desperate to win, like he has to win or die.

In slough we learn life is messed up:
“Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety seven down”
This shows that every thing is different to what he is used to and does not like it. The word ”mess“ suggested that he thinks the town is the town is confused .Also he thinks the town is not very good so he wants the town to ,start again before all the towns in the country turns I to what slough is like. There is a rhyme in the quotation “town” and ”down” seems that he’s annoyed .

  14. We learn from this poem that life in Slough is very industrial:
“ There isn’t grass to graze a cow.”
This shows that the country side has been destroyed in order to build industrial buildings eg. factories, bright canteens and work offices. The word “isn’t” implies that there is not any grass or country side for the cows to live off of. The words “grass” and “graze” suggest that the cows can only graze if there is grass. But since there is no grass then the cows cannot survive and this makes the poet frustrated, angry and betrayed.

We learn from the poem “Slough” that people think that they should look fake to look better:
“Their wives frizz out peroxide hair.”
This shows that these women have to fake their looks to attract men. The word “peroxide” suggests that women in Slough have rich husbands and that they dye their hair so that there husbands think they look beautiful! The poet thinks that the women who bleach their hair are fake, disgusting and worthless. He knows that they don’t have to be someone else to look nice.

  15. 1. In “Slough” we learn that the life there is industrial and every one is only interested in money:
“Those air-conditioned, bright canteen tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans, tinned minds, tinned breath.”
This implies that he thinks every thing is too industrial and there needs to be more farms and country side.
The sentence “tinned breath” implies that the people have became used to the new industrial city instead of the old, quiet and peaceful country side.

    2. in the poem we also learned that the poet hates the town because he expressed it ass a mess:
“Mess up the mess they call a town”.
This implies he despises the town because of the industrial factories.
The word “mess” implies that the town could be messy because of the thick smoke in the air.

What do we learn about life in Slough from the poem?

In this poem we learn that life in Slough is industrial:
“There isn’t grass to graze a cow”
This shows that there is no country side; it has been replaced with factories and buildings. The word ‘isn’t’ implies that there is not any country or farmland for cows to live on. The words ‘graze’ and ‘grass’ makes it knowledgeable that cows need grass to graze, As there is no grass then the cows won’t survive because they need it to eat and live on.

In this poem we learn that life in Slough is closed in:
“Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans, tinned minds, and tinned breath”
This implies that people in Slough are trapped their. The words ‘Tinned minds’ shows that the people don’t think for themselves, their minds are locked in a box and they go about everyday living in the moment when they need to be thinking about what they do.

  17. Slough is not nice to live in from industrial waste what they have considering it’s the countryside it must be horrible. There must be no cows what are there.”Theres no grass to graze a cow” this means that the farm there must struggle to keep animals alive

He must be suicidal because he says “its not fit for humans now”. This means that he doesn’t care if he dies or anyone gets blown up.

We learn life in slough is not fit for a cow:
”they isn’t grass to graze a cow”
This show that the town is not got any countryside for the cows because it is probly lots of buildings. Which means that the no county side.

We learn that life is slough is a boring place:
”Come friendly bombs fall of slough!”
